Data Security Strategies: Protecting Your Business in 2024 🔒
Did you know: 60% of small businesses close within six months of a cyber attack? Protecting your data is absolutely critical
Dear Du Pont Community
Did you know that 60% of small businesses close within six months of a cyber attack? Ensuring your data is secure has never been more critical. Data security is protecting your information from unauthorized access, corruption, or theft. This includes personal data, financial records, and intellectual property.
It’s common sense to protect your business data from external cyberattacks – but have you considered insider threats? By that, we mean both employee negligence (an innocent mistake, inadvertently deleting information) or perhaps malicious intent. | ![]() |
Have you trained your employees on what to look out for? A huge proportion of attacks rely on getting one of your staff to inadvertently click on an innocent looking link, that downloads malware. You must ensure your team of staff are well equipped to recognise and avoid cyber threats like banking scams or disguised links. But the converse of this is also true; you need to take steps to protect your business from internal theft of IP, customer data or other valuable information.
Do you protect your data like you protect your premises? We visited a client’s premises recently and found their physical security was impeccable ,but their digital defences were lacking. Once we entered their premises we were able to join their network, we could get all around their network, into their databases, into their customer details and banking information – it was all easily available to anyone with a bit of nous.
Have you considered the risk to your business? This client needed help to look at their security from a holistic perspective. They need a partner who understands business risk – and can look at their critical assets and determine what to separate; what to protect and how; with which backup support and what other vulnerabilities to consider.
Internal protection of your customer data, banking information and your IP is crucial. Technology has advanced and so have cyber threats. We’re finding that often IT security has been purchased on a piecemeal basis as the business grows. Salespeople have sold IT software – but not a solution; leaving you with both loopholes and unnecessary duplication. We analysed a client’s bill recently – it has dozens of line items for data protection, but they were unsure what these meant or what they covered.
Do you outsource any services? If you do, then you’re also responsible for your client data whilst in the hands of those third-party outsourcing organisations. How are you protecting yourself from that risk? If you’re relying on them to take the necessary precautions, how do you know if they really are? You could be opening yourself up for substantial risk.
Conclusion Security has become such a critical issue that it’s time to take a holistic approach. Conduct a comprehensive review of your assets and requirements and design a solution that best fits your requirements now and into the foreseeable future. Is the set of services you bought 5 years ago still appropriate for your needs?
Because data protection is key to operating a modern, efficient business, we’re offering a free security consultation to review your security risks. Armed with the right information – you’re well placed to make an informed decision. Don’t wait until it’s too late!
